it seems to be a combination of things, for whatever reason font-weight 400 isn't available. Something somewhere doesn't support variable fonts

I think I can undo the extra vars file now and see if it works...

no, looks like a separate file is necessary. The tailwind/postcss plugin cannot handle HubL (unless it is in quotes)
